Every stay-at-home Mom will confess that getting back to the job after the large gap is a challenge. Not every Mom will adapt to the new routine without her precious kid. Not every Mom will qualify for the strict requirements and high standards of the labor market. The good news is that getting back to work is absolutely possible. The bad news is that every stay-at-home Mom has to tailor her resume, cover letter, and other application documents to the desired job and it requires a lot of time.

So, I tried to figure out how to list skills on a resume if you are a stay-at-home Mom.

Stay-at-Home Mom Skills for Resume

There are different categories of Moms, who are going to return to the job. The classification is based on the amount of the working experience. So, understand what category you qualify for and follow the recommendations for each kind of stay-at-home mother.

Moms with Large Working Experience

Moms from this category usually have fewer problems with resume writing and picking up the good skills for a resume. The main problem lies in explaining the large employment gap. Yes, you took intensive care of your child but you should present it in your favor.

The best way not to focus on your employment gap would be to choose a combination type of the resume. It focuses on the skills and qualities that are relevant to the particular job. This information can be supported by the previous working experience. So, your employment gap will be omitted.

When you are writing a resume, you should open it with the qualification summary. For instance, let’s imagine that you are going to apply for a job in a finance world. Here are examples of skills for resume for stay-at-home Moms:

1)    Management Skills: an ability to train 2 junior accountants and monitor the productivity of their work during the first month of their work.
2)    Efficiency and Time Management: an ability to conduct reports and audits before deadlines.
3)    Relevant Job Skills: a skill to adjust financial reports to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and conduct risk analysis with a help of FRAP (Facilitated Risk Analysis Process).

Moms with Little Working Experience

When you are a stay-at-home Mom with a little working experience, you still can cope with it. The best decision would start and focus on your education unless it’s relevant to the job. Furthermore, it’s important to use Career Objective to state why you are the perfect candidacy for the position. As turning Mom skills into job skills can be complicated, this variant is a winning solution.

To show that you are a good candidacy, it’s crucial to mention the university, volunteering projects, internships, high GPA, coursework. It’s important to remember that all these documents must be relevant to the position! Otherwise, reaching success is almost impossible.

Moms with No Working Experience

Moms of this category still can pick up the best skills for the resume. If you have a relevant education, you should consider the previous paragraph. Otherwise, keep on reading.

The most relevant recommendation would be to use the approach that would a graduate from the high school use in his resume. Brainstorm all possible pieces of information that could attract your potential recruiter. Here are key skills for a resume when you have got nothing to write:

1)    Freelancing. Freelancing isn’t only about rewriting. On the Internet, you can find plenty of opportunities such as data entry, graphic design, websites managing, etc. Freelancing isn’t the most powerful skill but it can be useful unless it’s relevant.

2)    Volunteering. On the surface, there are no handy opportunities. But, in fact, almost every institution needs someone, who would help for free or for the minimum payment. Just think what you need, research the possible variant, and go and ask.

3)    Learning new skills. Unless you have time, you must use it and learn new skills. You don’t need much time. It’s possible to take courses online.

We all know that using social media for job search can do a lot of good for the applicant. It helps you stand out from the hundreds of others and find a dream job. Here are three main reasons to hop on the social media board:

1. Showing the Knowledge

When people show a deeper understanding of the industry they work in, it makes them look well-trusted. It doesn't require having a personal blog. Writing the relevant information about the news and events in the related industry blog works too. The latter is a perfect option for the busy and not so creative people.

2. Demonstrating a Willingness to Learn

Not all of the social media job search sites are user-friendly. However, every product of the digital technology takes some time to master. It is especially important if electronic devices weren't a part of your childhood or youth.

Nobody has to be a computer pro. However, understanding benefits of using social media for job search reveals the applicant's awareness of the modern state of affairs as well as readiness to learn and comprehend new skills included. This point is hard to undervalue.

Experts say that Pinterest is a good place to start. It has something to do with the fact of the visual representation. Resume and cover letter are regular documents. Photos, related to the education and work experience, add a personal touch.

3. Finding out More About the Company

Social media are useful not only for the hiring managers cause the benefit flow both ways. Social networks can communicate a lot about the company, its clients and work ethic.
Moreover, using the data in the resume or cover letter can give you an advantage. Just stay cautious and avoid writing unreasonable things. Then they'll get the feeling of familiarity even before the interview.

So, personally I use these social media for job search:

1. LinkedIn was created as a professional network, so it does what it says. It's a top place to search for a job.

One of the most important things here is a profile. That's what other users see and that's how you represent yourself. A good profile should contain up-to-date and accurate information about the skills, education, and work experience; incorporating the keywords won't go amiss either. It will help the recruiter find you and recognize if you're exactly what they look for.

However, there are certain disadvantages of using social media for job search. Well, to be more accurate, it can be a problem if you do not use them correctly. But make sure to submit the right photo. Your photo is a very significant feature of an account, particularly when it comes to the LinkedIn profile. The right photo will maximize the efforts and make a good first impression.

2. Instagram is more than endless selfies and recipes accounts. It can be a perfect tool for the personal branding. It enhances your personality while creating a professional image. If your Instagram is full of photos from the good old days, it's better to create a new profile. Otherwise, the reputation may hurt. Let private things stay private.

Instagram doesn't work the same way for specialists from all industries. One can find it more helpful than the other. Analyze the circumstances and decide how the network can help just you.

Job stress is definitely something we all experience as workers but we handle it in different ways. While many people know that new job stress and anxiety usually go together, there is a number of other warning signs and symptoms of job stress and burnout. The most widespread signs are having apathy, boredom, frustration, anxiety, fatigue, anger, or depression. From the side of physical health, you may experience such problems as headaches or stomachaches.

Coping with Job Stress

We are going to talk about the best strategies for coping with job stress and ways to overcome it. The first rule is that unlike your family and health all jobs are disposable, so you shouldn’t be afraid to replace it. You can always change your job and try to find a better one if you think your employer wants too much from you. You will also need to learn how to deal with new job stress while joining the ranks, but it’s hopefully something more enjoyable and exciting.

Modify the Current Job Situation

In case you really like your employer and you are feeling comfortable with your job, but it has become too boring or stressful, try to ask about tailoring the job to your skills. If the boss has promoted you into a more stressful position, don’t be afraid to ask for a lateral transfer or even a transfer back to your previous position.

Get Some Time Away

You are welcome to take a short break if you feel the stress is growing and you soon won’t be able to cope with it. It’s good to walk away from the situation, sit on a bench, take a short walk in the park, or even exercise. If you are too exhausted to do that, you can just find a quiet place and relax while listening to your iPod. Also, when you or your coworkers start to take things too seriously, try to find some humor in the situation. You may share with them a joke or a funny story in order to take the strain off.

However, the time you’ve spent staying at home and raising your kids can present serious difficulties when you decide to venture back and join the workforce. How to hide career hiatus? How will you market yourself now when you haven’t had a real job for a few years? How will you convince a recruiter that you are the perfect candidate for their position and that, in spite of your gap years, you are excited and ready to start work?

The golden rule is not to panic. Even if you are frightened, remind yourself that you have got everything you need to carry it off. Lots of people come back into the workforce, and you certainly can, too.

Update Your Resume 

The most important thing you need to remember when updating your resume is to avoid using a functional resume. The problem is that most employers will immediately realize that you are attempting to hide something. More than that, your CV can even get lost in a tracking system in case you are using online application tools such as company websites or job boards. This concerns only functional resume.

Create a Chronological Resume  

The best type of resume you can use to highlight your desire to re-join professionals is a chronological resume. This is the most common style of resume for any type of job hunters. You can highlight the stuff you are best known for and most proud of. Also, you can make a “Main Proficiencies” section and include the things you already know how to do. Finally, you make your career chronology and first list the most recent positions.

Include Part-Time Work and Volunteer Assignments 

There is no rule that allows you to include only paid and full-time work in your career chronology. That’s why, if you worked part-time while staying at home with the kids or took part in any volunteer roles don’t hesitate to mention this experience in your chronology.

Show the best you did during these assignments: include anything from recruiting volunteers for a school club to planning charity events. Any type of experience can be relevant. Another tip is, under any circumstances, not to create a section on your CV listing your time as a stay-at-home mom as a full-time job. While parents know that it’s certainly an intense and demanding position, most recruiters won’t take this part of your CV seriously.

Hello my reader! I'm soooo excited to join the blogging world finally! I have followed many of the talented bloggers and inspiring, prominent individuals and now I hope to share some of my materials and ideas with you. 

I do believe in Mark Twain quote: “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” By the way, it sounds almost like Confucius saying: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Anyway, these statements share one idea – you must love your job. And I believe that anyone, even a Mom with kids and no experience, can do that. Do you think it is impossible? I’m ready to prove a negative!
